With no surprise at all, ‘Riddick’ has taken the top spot at the box office by pulling in an estimated $18.6 million this past weekend. This is a little shy of its predecessor ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ which opened to $24 million back in 2004. As the only wide release this weekend, ‘Riddick’ was practically guaranteed the number one spot.
‘Riddick’ also ended the three week streak of ‘Lee Daniel’s: The Butler’ as the number one film. ‘The Butler’ brought in $8.9 million and pushed it past the $90 million mark.
The Spanish-language film ‘Instructions Not Included’ earned $8.1 million as it expanded to 700 theaters. The film has now grossed $20 million domestically.
‘We’re the Millers’ is still hanging on as the comedy raked in $7.9 million and drops a spot to number four.
The weekend after Labor Day is generally one of slowest weeks at the box office. Next week should see a little more excitement when ‘Insidious 2’ is unleashed into theaters.
