It seems orange IS the new black.
‘Prisoners’ tops the box office by debuting with $21.4 million this past weekend. The film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman has revived strong reviews and a star studded cast that was sure to bring movie-goers in. This was Gyllenhaal’s 4th biggest opening behind ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ ($68.7 million), ‘The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ ($30.1 million) and ‘Jarhead’ ($27.7 million).
‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ fell victim to the second week curse as its gross dropped 64% to $14.5 million this weekend. Despite having bad reviews and lack of word of mouth, the film has already outperformed its predecessor.
In third and fourth place is ‘The Family’ starring Robert De Niro which brought in $7 million and the Spanish language film ‘Instructions Not Included’ which pulled in another $5.7 million respectively.
The only other newcomer this week is ‘Battle of the Year’ which rounds out the top five by bringing in $5 million.
Next week will see a slew of new releases including ‘Rush’ starring Chris Hemsworth, the Guido style comedy ‘Don Jon’ and ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2’ for the kids.
