Liam Neeson is flying high as his new action packed thriller ‘Non-Stop’ lands atop the box office.
The plane flick netted $30 million over the weekend and was enough to stop the hot streak of ‘The LEGO Movie’. ‘Non-Stop’ didn’t earn as much as Neeson’s last box office champ ‘Taken 2’ which made a hefty $49.5 million debut.
Runner up this week is the newest adaptation of Jesus Christ’s life titled ‘Child of God’ which raked in $26.5 million. The film wasn’t able to mimic Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ‘ which earned $89 million its debut weekend back in 2004. The film may have legs with churchgoing audiences and may have some staying power.
With the debut of ‘Non-Stop’, former three week champ ‘The LEGO Movie’ slides down to third place with $21 million. The film has passed the $200 million mark domestically and has earned a whopping $330 million worldwide in its first month at the box office which makes it the biggest movie this year. Apparently everything is awesome for the movie.
‘The Monuments Men’ is faring better than studio projections and holds steady in fourth place with $5 million while last weeks runner up ‘3 Days to Kill’ rounds out the top five with $4.9 million.
Next week the violet Spartan army of ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ hopes to take down Neeson’s flight when it hits theaters Thursday night.
