Spiderman is no match for a team of frat boys.
The Zac Efron assisted comedy ‘Neighbors’ blasted to the top spot of the box office by posting a huge $51 million debut and effectively dethroned ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. Overseas, the film pulled in another $34 million and had a worldwide debut of $85 million. With a budget of only $18 million, the film is already a certified smash. Many R-rated comedies have been huge successes over summer including ‘The Hangover’ franchise, ‘The Heat’, and ‘Bridesmaids’.
Don’t feel too bad about Spidey though. Even though ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ fell to the runner up position with $37.2 million domestically, it has already grossed $550 million worldwide in only three weeks. The film is expected to be one of the highest grossing movies this year.
Holding down to the third place position is the hit female comedy ‘The Other Woman’ starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton. The femme-fatales boasted $9 million over the weekend.
‘Heaven is For Real’ is still turning profits as the religious flick earned another $7 million which brings its domestic total to $75.2 million.
Rounding out the top five is ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ which made $5.8 million.
‘Godzilla’ is the next summer blockbuster looking to take over the top of the box office when it hits theaters Thursday night.
