‘Lone Survivor’ raided the top spot from ‘Frozen’ this week at the box office.
The military action flick pulled in a hefty $38.5 million according to studio estimates. The film is based on a Navy SEAL team who are sent on a dangerous mission in Afghanistan in 2005. ‘Lone Survivor’ boasts the second biggest January opening behind ‘Cloverfield’ which opened with $40.1 million back in 2008.
‘Frozen’ is solid in the runner up position by bringing in another $17 million. This raises its domestic total to $317 million and surpasses Disney’s $312 record set by ‘The Lion King’ back in 1994.
Fresh off a Golden Globe win for its star Leonardo DiCaprio, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ is sitting pretty in third place with a $9 million finish this weekend. Expect the film to hover around the top ten of the box office for awhile due to the awards buzz the film has been generating.
Tied for fourth place in contrast is the critically acclaimed ‘American Hustle’ and the horribly reviewed ‘The Legend of Hercules’. Each film earned $8.6 million.
‘The Legend of Hercules’ is the first big flop of 2014. The film cost approximately $70 million to make and is expected to take a big loss for the studio.
Next week ‘Lone Survivor’ will go head to head with ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ & ‘Devil’s Due’ for the top spot at the box office.
