‘The LEGO Movie’ has crashed ‘Ride Along’s joy ride.
The animated family film took in $69.1 million over the weekend. This is the second largest debut of all time in February behind ‘The Passion of the Christ’ which opened to $83 million back in 2004. The movie has been getting great reviews and currently sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The positive word of mouth will definitely keep ‘The LEGO Movie’ on top. Fans wont have to wait long for a sequel as Warner Bros. already has one in the works.
‘The Monument’s Men’ also had a good weekend. The historical comedy pulled in $22.7 million. This is the highest opening for a George Clooney directed film ever.
Slipping into third place is ‘Ride Along’ which earned $9.4 million and crosses the $100 million mark domestically.
Still reaping the rewards of its sing along re-release, ‘Frozen’ is solid in the top five and earns another $6.9 million. The film has earned $368.7 million domestically and passes ‘Despicable Me 2’ as the highest grossing animated film of 2013.
Rounding out the top five is the Zac Efron comedy ‘That Awkward Moment’ which pulled in $5.5 million.
‘Vampire Academy’ was the only other new release this week. The film showed no sign of life as it only pulled in $4.1 million.
Next week ‘Robocop’ looks to crush ‘The LEGO Movie’ and a slew of romantic love movies which hit theaters for Valentine’ Day.
