‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ scared away ‘The Family’ from the top spot at the box office this weekend. The horror flick brought in $41 million. This marks the biggest opening day in September of all time. ‘Insidious’ is also James Wan’s second top horror movie this year. His previous effort ‘The Conjuring’, also starring Patrick Wilson, opened with $41 million back in July.
Robert De Niro’s drama ‘The Family’ took second place earning $14.5 million which surpassed the studios predictions.
Last weeks winner ‘Riddick’ toppled to third bringing in $7 million. This brings its 10-day total to $31.1 million. Vin Diesel should be happy with those numbers as he fronted a majority of the bill for the $38 million action flick.
‘Lee Daniels: The Butler’ finally passed the $100 million mark by taking in 5.6 million in 3,239 theaters. This makes ‘The Butler’ Forest Whitaker’s 9th highest grossing film of all time.
Next week will showcase a few films that are vying for the top spot which include the historical film ‘Parkland’ and Jake Gyllenhaal’s police drama ‘Prisoners’.
