‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has reclaimed the top spot at the box office after a disappointing week for new releases.
Marvel’s gang of misfits stormed the box office with another $17.6 million in its fourth week of release. It brings its total domestic gross to $251 million and has officially surpassed ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ as the highest grossing film of the summer. It shattered August box office records with its historic debut of $94 million. The feat is quite spectacular as the box office slows in late summer.
‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ is still holding strong in its third week with $16.8 million and has now earned $145 million in its third week.
The teenage melodrama ‘If I Stay’ starring Chloe Grace Mortez fell just below ‘Turtles’ with a $16.4 million haul. Studio execs should be pleased with its opening as the movie grossed ahead of estimations and is already turning a profit as it only cost $11 million to make.
‘Let’s Be Cops’ fell to fourth place in its second week with another $11 million.
Rounding out the top five this week is the faith football drama ‘When the Game Stands Tall’ with its $9 million gross. Many of this years religious films have fared well so don’t count it out just yet.
Further down the list, the long delayed ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ opened in eight place with a dismal $6.5 million. Trouble began for the film when it only grossed $495k during its midnight premiers. It falls way short of its predecessor which opened with $29.1 million back in 2005 and went on to gross $159 million globally.
‘Guardians’ will look to take on the demons of ‘As Above, So Below’ and Pierce Brosnan in ‘The November Man’ when they hit theaters this week.
