‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ have broken yet another record for Marvel in the slowest week at the box office this year.
The Chris Pratt-led gang of misfits takes the top spot of the box office for the fifth non-consecutive week since its release at the beginning of August with $10.3 million over the weekend. This surpasses the previous holder ‘Iron Man 3’ who had 4 weeks at number one last summer. The movie has taken in $294 million domestically and is the highest grossing film of the year this far.
Still holding down the runner up position is ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ which pulled in another $6.5 million over the weekend.
‘Let’s Be Cops’ continues to turn a profit as the film took in $5.56 million and slides up to third place. It brings its total to $66.7 million off of a $17 million budget.
Just falling short of ‘Let’s Be Cops’ and third place is the teen melodrama ‘If I Stay’ which earned $5.55 million.
Rounding out the top five this week is Pearce Brosnan and the action flick ‘The November Man’ which actually rises one place with $4.3 million. Relativity Films have already announced a sequel for the movie before it hit theaters. They may want to reconsider that option now.
The only newcomer this week debuts outside of the top 10. The Elvis Presley inspired film ‘The Identical’ opened to a disappointing $1.5 million across 1,956 theaters.
Traditionally the weekend after a holiday is slower so the small sums were expected. ‘Dolphin Tale 2′ and ‘No Good Deed’ hope to change that when they hit theaters this Friday.
