‘Gravity’ is still soaring high in its second week at the box office by bringing in a record breaking $44.3 million. The film only had a 21% drop which is the lowest drop in film history for any movie that grossed over $55 million its first week. Domestically, ‘Gravity’ has already pushed past the $100 million mark and is the third and fourth highest grossing film for George Clooney and Sandra Bullock respectively. The film owes most of its success to 3D sales which accounts for a whopping 84% percent of ticket sales.
The other surprise this week was ‘Captain Phillips’ which slid into second place at $26 million which is well above the $19 million the studio projected. The film has generated Oscar buzz with its high reviews from critics and Tom Hank’s performance as the captain of a ship that has been hijacked.
With little family movie competition, ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2’ is still hanging on by bringing in another $14.2 million. The film has now matched its production budget of $78 million.
The other newcomer, ‘Machete Kills’ opened to a dismal $3.8 million and a fourth place start. This is director Robert Rodriguez’s worst opening of a film ever.
Next week ‘Carrie’ hopes to scare ‘Gravity’ out of the top spot when it hits theaters on Thursday night.
