In an unbelievable third week at the top spot, ‘Gravity’ takes in $31 million over the weekend which brings its total to a whopping $171 million domestically. Only ‘Lee Daniels: The Butler’ and ‘Fast & Furious 6’ have spent three weeks at the box office this year. ‘Gravity’ owes much of its success to its high IMAX and 3D ticket sales which boosts its total.
‘Captain Phillips’ is still staying above water and holding tight in the runner up position by bringing in $17.3 million.
The biggest new release this week, ‘Carrie’ comes in at number 3 by bringing in $17 million. Following mixed reviews from critics and fans the film has a modest opening. The remake was expected to generate roughly $22-$25 million. If I was Sandra Bullock, I would be careful of her wrath.
‘The Escape Plan’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone failed to break out by earning $9.8 million and a fifth place finish.
The Julian Assange based film ‘The Fifth Estate’ falls flat by opening to a dismal $1.7 million for Disney. This is the worst opening for a wide release this year. Assange predicted the movie’s failure when he told the New York Times that the film was “a reactionary snoozefest that only the U.S. government could love.”
Next week ‘Bad Grandpa’ hopes to shoot down ‘Gravity‘s rocket and ground the film from the top spot.
