‘Godzilla’ is now the king of the box office.
Legendary Pictures legendary monster movie hauled in a massive $93 million and obliterated studio predictions for its opening weekend. He also earned the title of the biggest Friday haul of the year with $38.5 million. However it couldn’t top the highest box office debut of the year. That title still belongs to ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ when it raked in $95 million back in April.
Zac Efron and Seth Rogen fell to second place with their frat comedy ‘Neighbors’ which earned another $26 million bringing its domestic total to $90.6 million.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ sits in the third place spot with $16.8 million. The film also holds the third highest opening debut of the year when it earned $91 million earlier this month.
John Hamm and his sports drama flick ‘Million Dollar Arm’ was less than stellar as it opened in fourth place with $10.5 million. With a budget of $25 million the film has a ways to go to earn it back.
‘The Other Woman’ is still holding on strong as the femme fatal comedy rounds out the top five with another $6.3 million earned.
No movie has yet to debut past the $100 million mark this summer. We will see if ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ can take on the challenge when it hits theaters on Thursday night.
