With snow storms rampaging around the US this week, its only fitting that Disney’s animated flick ‘Frozen’ retakes number one at the box office in its seventh week of release.
The film took in $20.7 million over the weekend which helped bring its worldwide total to $600 million. ‘Frozen’ is now Disney’s second highest grossing film ever behind ‘The Lion King’. It is rare that a film takes the top spot so late in its theatrical run. The last film to do that would be back in 2010 when ‘Avatar’ dominated the box office.
Ghosts couldn’t keep up with princesses as ‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ had to settle for second place with $18.2 million. The film underperformed slightly as studios estimated the film to open with roughly $22 million. Regardless the film is already turning a profit as it cost only $5 million to make.
Still roaming around the top three, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ took in another $16.3 million and brings its domestic total to $229 million.
‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘American Hustle’ round out the top five by pulling in $13.4 and $13.2 million respectfully.
Next week ‘The Legend of Hercules’ will try and claim the top spot from ‘Frozen’. Hopefully the Greek god wont get too chilly in that red skirt he wears.
