The sci-fi thriller took in an estimated $30.5 million over the weekend. ‘Elysium’ starring Matt Damon, opened on par with predictions but still off the mark for a $115 million budget film. Director Neill Blomkamp’s previous action film, ‘District 9’ opened with $37.4 million. The movie does still have foreign ticket sales to try and turn a profit.
It looks like Jennifer Anniston and Jason Sudeikis have the last laugh. Despite receiving lukewarm reviews, ‘We’re the Millers’ brought in $26.6 million over the weekend and $38 million over its 5-day release.
Family movies suffered this weekend as ‘Planes’ and ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ couldn’t keep up with its peers. ‘Planes’ opened up with a modest $22 million which isn’t bad considering Disney originally intended for the ‘Cars’ spin off to have a direct to DVD release.
‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ flopped bringing in a dismal $14.6 million over the weekend and a 5-day total of $23.5 million. The sequel’s opening is far behind ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’s $37 million opening over Presidents Day weekend back in 2010.
Next week is packed with more new releases as ‘Lee Daniel’s: The Butler’, ‘Kick-Ass 2’ and ‘Jobs’ hits theaters.
