To no surprise to anyone, ‘Divergent’ takes the top spot at the box office this weekend.
The dystopian young adult film pulled in a respectable $56 million. It fared below studio predictions which had it tracking at around $60+ million. It was expected to earn more than ‘Twilight’ which managed to pull in $69.6 million back in 2008. With a budget of $80 million, the film will have no problem becoming a hit.
Taking the runner up position this week is another newcomer ‘Muppets Most Wanted’. The film also debuted below studio predictions as it only raked in $17 million. Estimates had the film bringing in around $26 million. The opening number is also below its predecessor ‘The Muppets’ which earned $29 million in 2011.
‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman’ hold strong in third place by bringing in another $11.8 million and brings its domestic total to $81.1 million.
Rounding out the top five is ‘God’s Not Dead’ with $9.2 million and ‘300: Rise of an Empire‘ at $8.5 million.
‘Noah’ looks to flood out ‘Divergent’ and the rest of the competition as it floats into theaters Friday.
