‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ is flying high.
The Marvel sequel claims the top spot for a second week earning $41.1 million. Despite the 56% dip from last weekend, the film has already pulled in $159 million domestically. It is just shy of the $176 million domestic haul from its predecessor ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ back in 2011.
The big debut this week comes from the birds of ‘Rio 2’. They were able to cook up a $39 million opening which is exactly what ‘Rio’ pulled in back in 2011 as well. The film fell slightly under predictions with studios estimating a $40-$45 million opening.
The ghosts of ‘Oculus’ come in third place which managed to scare up $12 million. The film had an estimated budget of $5 million and is already a box office hit.
‘Draft Day’ misses their pick at the top as the film earned $9.8 million and earns a fourth place finish.
Rounding out this weeks top five is ‘Divergent’ which made $7.5 million and brings its domestic total to $124.9 million.
‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ may have some competition next week as ‘Transcendence’ and ‘A Haunted House 2’ try and take him down.
