Lionsgate released the first trailer for Bombshell on Wednesday, featuring a tense elevator ride between Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, and Margot Robbie. The star-studded film also features the likes of John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon, Allison Janney, Connie Britton, Rob Delaney, and Malcolm McDowell.
Bombshell tells the story of former Fox News head Roger Ailes and his downfall amid sexual harassment accusations. Lithgow will portray Ailes while Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron take on the roles of Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly, respectively. Margot Robbie plays a fictional producer in the film.
Known for her equally transformative role in Monster, Theron is unrecognizable as Kelly in the first trailer. The actress recently spoke about what it was like to portray the infamous news anchor. “I didn’t know how complicated her situation was and I think for a lot of people, they didn’t understand why she didn’t just speak up. She was in a complicated place and as a human being, I have empathy for that. I don’t think a lot of people truly understood that.”
Lithgow also spoke about the film at Sundance earlier this year, praising its unique perspective on the scandal. “There’s so much talk about the very good signs that there’s so many great women’s stories being told. This might be one of the best because it really is about six or seven extremely different women who have extremely different experiences and responses to the crisis at Fox. I play the crisis.”
