Quote: “That’s the thing about pain. It demands to be felt.”
Review: ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ is a magnificent film that builds you up and tears you down. It is laced with humor and wit among its heartbreaking material.
The movie follows Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16-year-old girl diagnosed with cancer that has spread to her lungs. When she reluctantly attends a support group for her mother, she meets 17-year-old Augustus Waters, a former basketball player who lost his leg to cancer. From there, they embark on an epic love story as they learn about life and what love means.
Although, if there is any reason to see the movie, it is for the chemistry between Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. They are a perfect pair that tug on your heartstrings. Elgort’s goofy personality and boyish charm compliments Woodley’s honest and natural performance.
The film is based on the best selling novel of the same name by writer John Green and definitely does justice to the book. It explores heavy issues and certainly packs an emotional punch. They act like normal teens by talking on the phone all night, holding hands and going on picnics in the park but death is always hanging out just around the corner. Don’t feel guilty if you are in full on sobs by the last 20 minutes because chances are the rest of the theater is as well.
Of course there are a few plot holes that are easily forgettable in the sheer emotion of the movie and it does drag on a bit towards the end. However, that does not ruin the great storytelling throughout the film.
‘The Fault in Our Stars’ is a summer rarity. It is difficult to find a tremendously heartwarming film among a sea of comic book blockbusters and CGI explosions. The movie will surely do wonders for fans of the novel, for the box office, and the tissue industry. You heard it here first. Buy Kleenex stock now.
