22 JUMP STREET – JUNE 13
Director: Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (The LEGO Movie, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs)
Stars: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Jillian Bell, Amber Stevens, and Wyatt Russel
Synopsis: Two cops go undercover as students to a local college to help stop the spread of a new synthetic drug.
Runtime: 112 minutes
Quote: “Where did you find this gringo? The Mumford & Sons concert?”
Review: Sorry ‘Neighbors’ and ‘The Other Woman’ but ’22 Jump Street’ will be, without a doubt, the most hilarious movie this year.
The cop comedy sequel follows Schmidt and Jenko as they go undercover as college kids to try and stop the spread of a new drug called WHYPHY. When they find they fit into entirely different groups, the duo will have to learn to overcome their differences and solve the investigation.
’22 Jump Street’ is a rarity because it is a sequel that’s better than the original. It is easily the most brilliant self aware movie in recent memory, poking fun at its predecessor and itself. The beginning of the film is full of jokes about the films bigger budget, doing everything exactly the same as in ’21 Jump Street’ and Captain Dickson’s office looking like “a giant cube of ice” (hes played by Ice Cube).
Jonah Hill proves he is the self proclaimed “light skinned princess like Beyonce” stealing the movie with his witty one liners and impersonations. There is also a huge twist in store for his character that no one in the audience will see coming. Channing Tatum can also stand on his own with his adorable goofball persona to score laughs.
However, the film’s best comedic weapon is ‘Workaholics’ Jillian Bell. Her stonecold persona is packed with old man jokes at Schmidt’s expense. Her fight with Hill is also comedic gold as it borders between all out brawl and awkward make out session.
’22 Jump Street’ boasts bigger bromances, bigger jokes and bigger laughs. If you hope there is going to be a third Jump Street installment than look no further than its brilliant credit sequence that explores possible sequels for the duo. Seriously. The credits needs its own Oscar.
