Marcus Gardley is writing the film’s script based on his interpretation of the Broadway production that reimagined Alice Walker’s novel. The Broadway production debuted in 2005 and won in 11 Tony Awards. It returned in 2015 to win four more Tony Awards. The Color Purple also earned a previous film adaptation that starred Oprah Winfrey.
