The Portland Trail Blazers have hired veteran NBA broadcaster Kevin Calabro as their main play-by-play voice, the team announces.
Kevin Calabro, an award-winning broadcast veteran that spent 21 seasons with the Seattle Supersonics, was last seen on the NBA scene back in 2008. Calabro first started with the Sonics in 1988, then eventually left the team in 2008 once it relocated to Oklahoma City.
Most recently, Kevin Calabro was honored with the 2016 Keith Jackson Western Sports Star of the Year award. Before this, he was named Sportscaster of the Year for the state of Washington in 1997, 2000-2003, and 2006. Calabro has years of experience on the national level, working with companies such as TNT, TBS, ESPN Radio, and NBA TV.
“I’m excited to join a great organization like the Trail Blazers that’s committed to excellence; is led by a devoted owner in Paul Allen; and is supported by the most passionate fans anywhere in the country,” said Calabro. “With two young stars in Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, a great group of teammates and a terrific coach like Terry Stotts, the Trail Blazers have an incredibly bright future. I consider it a privilege to live and work in the Pacific Northwest, and look forward to becoming part of this franchise and the greater Portland community.”
Kevin Calabro replaces Mike Barrett, who departed the team earlier in the week. Barrett’s color commentator Mike Rice also departed the franchise, as well.
Blazers President and CEO Chris McGowan stated the team is still conducting a search for a color commentator to join Calabro.
