Sharknado 4 is happening, which just goes to show how much America loves to be terrified of sharks. So it makes sense that we’re getting another film that demonizes them: The Shallows. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the film has just gotten its first trailer, showing Nancy (Blake Lively) on a rock in the middle of the ocean as she’s stalked by a shark.
There hasn’t been much publicity for the film, nor has much been given in the way of a plot. However, Brent McKnight of Cinema Blend gives us this speculation:
“This trailer for The Shallows doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but there’s definitely the potential for this to be solid, fear-of-nature-style thriller.”
In the description for the trailer posted on Sony Pictures Entertainment‘s YouTube account, the company provides the following synopsis:
“Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. It’s Jaws for a new generation.”
“Jaws for a new generation” is quite a hefty promise for a film to make, considering its iconic status in the world of cinema. Based on this trailer, a lot of people are doubtful that Sony will be able to live up to the prediction. But, see for yourself – and watch the trailer below!
The Shallows stars Blake Lively, Óscar Jaenada, and Sedona Legge. The film swims into theatres on the 24th of June.
