The rumor mill has been hot for some time with speculation of a forthcoming Space Jam sequel starring LeBron James. It gained steam when LeBron announced his company SpringHill Entertainment would be teaming up with Warner Bros. Still, nothing has been confirmed, but Blake Griffin might be adding to the fire.
Griffin’s new Jordan ad, ‘The Dunk to End All Dunks’, for the Superfly 4s pits him against Marvin The Martian, which might have been the first hint.
But talking to Basketball Insiders’ Alex Kennedy, Griffin confirmed that if a Space Jam 2 is to occur, he “absolutely” wants parts:
“Oh, absolutely, absolutely. I’d love to be involved in any capacity, really. ‘Space Jam’ was a huge part of my childhood. I actually had a “Space Jam”-themed birthday party as a teen. Then, when I turned 21, my friends got me a ‘Space Jam’ cake again just to re-live the glory days. It has been a big thing for me so being able to be involved in any capacity would be great, even just being one of the guys that’s in there would be cool. I think it would be a lot of fun. If you told me when I was 8 years old that I could possibly have a chance to be in ‘Space Jam 2,’ it would have blown my mind. That would just be like another check off the bucket list.”
There’s no telling what this could actually turn into. If Space Jam 2 is going to be a real thing, at this point, we can assume that LeBron will be the star. Other players like Griffin who have that connection with the movie and can’t help but appease their inner-kid sensations might also be sprinkled into the movie. Some of Michael Jordan’s basketball peers were featured in the original, so that wouldn’t be anything new. The approach could and should be different, though. For now we’re still left to speculate if another Space Jam is even happening, but clearly there are willing and eager participants.
