Space Jam nostalgia is real. This time, the call-back is from a new Foot Locker commercial featuring two superstars.
In the new commercial – titled “Defy the Monstars” – Jimmy Butler and Blake Griffin help a group of young kids do just that.
The premise behind the ad is that the Monstars, on the 20th anniversary of Space Jam, are back. Their super team is ravaging every opponent, leading to cries about the boring state of basketball. (This all sounds reeeeally familiar.)
But when the Monstars close off the basketball court those kids play on, they have finally taken it too far. The team decides to play against the Monstars for a chance to take back their court. That’s where Blake Griffin comes in, as the Los Angeles Clippers power forward dons a uniform to help beat the Monstars (foreshadowing a future sequel role, perhaps?) Meanwhile, Jimmy Butler spray paints the word “defy” on a wall and lets his disdain for the alien basketball players known.
This is yet another brilliant Foot Locker commercial from the minds at the shoe store company. Griffin is made to play this sort of role and Butler is no chump actor either. Now if these two actually team up in a Space Jam sequel…
