Fans of the Bill Simmons podcast will have seen this deal coming from a mile away. With the success of the Bill Simmons produced ‘Andre The Giant’ special on HBO, the media company has signed a deal with the sports personality and podcast guru which will include producing content on multiple different platforms and genres but predominately in his expertise, sports.
According to Variety news, Simmons will ink a multi-year deal to produce content for various divisions of HBO including, TV, documentary & film. With his ‘Andre The Giant’ special reaching over 7 million viewers, this was really a no-brainer for HBO and company.
Bill Simmons has his own company as well with The Ringer, which has continuously gained viewership since its creation and is skyrocketing in terms of a following. Simmons, who is CEO of the Ringer and has the #1 podcast on their ‘The Bill Simmons Podcast’, expressed his excitement in joining the channel.
“I’m thrilled to keep going with the HBO family and can’t wait to get started on a couple of the more ambitious projects we’ve hatched,” Simmons said. “I witnessed it firsthand with our Andre doc – when you create something unique for HBO, they’ve built so much trust and equity in their audience over the years that it’s always going to be seen. Every single time. If it’s good and it’s on HBO, it will stand out. Even though we have more entertainment choices than ever right now, HBO still cuts through in an incredibly precise, almost unassailable way – and they work better with creatives than anyone, period. I am lucky to work with them and I know it.”
With The Ringer and HBO both having Simmons services now, we will be seeing and hearing a lot from him. Which is always good news. There is no news as to what he will start producing for HBO first but with the Ringer starting its’ own film division, Bill will have his hands full these next couple of years.
