The Cincinnati Bengals have signed head coach Marvin Lewis to a two-year extension, keeping Lewis around through 2019. Adam Schefter reported the news on Twitter today.

This news comes as a surprise to many in the sports world. It was even a surprise to many on the Bengals coaching staff. It was previously reported that this season would be the last season with Lewis as head coach.

Team owner Mike Brown said in a statement:
“Marvin Lewis has been an important member of the Cincinnati community and the Bengals family for the past 15 years, and we are happy to have reached this agreement. Marvin has made significant contributions during his time here. While recently we have fallen short of our expectations, we have full confidence in Marvin to re-establish winning football in 2018.”
Lewis also released a statement concerning his extension.
“My family and I are very grateful for the opportunity to stay in Cincinnati and continue my career with the Bengals. My job is to win a World Championship. We have a talented roster full of veteran leaders and emerging young stars, and I am committed to making the necessary improvements to put this team in the best position to win.”
Lewis has been the head coach of the Bengals for the past 15 years. During that time, Lewis has accumulated a 125-112-3 and holds team records for most wins, losses, and post-season appearances. Lewis is also the only coach to lose his first seven postseason games.
The Bengals ended the season with a 7-9 record and third in the AFC North. Many thought that the departure of Lewis would bring in a time of change within the organization. Though, with this signing, it is clear that the Bengals are ok with mediocracy.
