Free Agent wingman, Ben Gordon, agrees to two year deal with the Orlando Magic, as reported by Yahoo Sports Adrian Wojnarowski.
@WojYahooNBA: Free agent guard Ben Gordon has agreed to a two-year, $9 million deal with the Orlando Magic, league source tells Yahoo Sports.
Gordon can’t officially sign until July 10th but he has agreed to terms. The Magic add a veteran player but it is another guard. Currently under contract the Magic have four guards, Victor Oladipo, Willie Green,Elfrid Payton, Evan Fournier along with guard/forward Maurice Harkless.
Gordon brings good three point shooting and some offense to a team that is looked at early on to be a defense heavy squad. Gordon spent the last two seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats and averaged 10 points per game in 94 games. He shot 40 percent from the floor and 37.7 percent from three-point distance. Gordon though only played in 19 games last year for the Bobcats and was cut before the playoffs even started. This small deal makes sense for the Magic, especially with them gearing up for a big free agency in the years coming up.
If Gordon can return to his days of winning sixth man of the year like he did in his tenure with the Chicago Bulls, then this signing for the Magic might work out better than expected. The contract is small, so even if Gordon does get hurt or doesn’t perform up to the standard they want then there isn’t that much negative kickback from the team with this signing. A lot of youth on this team means Gordon might have a lot of mentoring to do, but the 31 year old could be alright with that as long as the Magic are alright with possibly struggling for a few more seasons. Orlando is poised to have a lot of money, but don’t expect them to make a huge splash this summer.
