According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Becky Hammon, an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, has been offered the head coaching position for the women’s basketball team at the University of Florida.
“The financial offer would be a considerable raise, especially considering that she’s still a young, behind-the-bench assistant on Gregg Popovich’s staff. Nevertheless, Hammon is grappling with the decision, because she has been determined to stay on course to become the NBA’s first female head coach, league sources said.”
Hammon played her college career at Colorado State University, and she went undrafted after her senior year in 1998. She was picked up by the New York Liberty, where she played for eight years. She was then traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars, where she retired from in 2014.
The Liberty inducted Becky Hammon into their Ring of Honor in 2015, and the Stars retired her jersey in 2016.
In August of 2014, Hammon was hired on as the first full-time woman coach in the history of the NBA by the San Antonio Spurs. In 2015, she was the head coach of the Spurs Las Vegas Summer League team and coached them to a championship, making her the first woman head coach to win a Summer League championship.
In the 2016 NBA All-Star Game, Hammon became the first female coach to be on the All-Star coaching staff.
