As the College Basketball season comes to a close. Some programs have some changes to make. It is very easy to become mediocre in the college scene. When it comes to Alabama. Their basketball isn’t as prestigious as their football program. Thinking about it most football programs aren’t as prestigious as Alabama’s but you get my logic.
But with all that athletic money. You have to do something with it. Which is why when ESPN announced that NBA head coach Avery Johnson is going to the Tide. I was applauding the idea.
The 50-year-old Johnson, an ESPN analyst, is from New Orleans and played in the NBA. He coached the Dallas Mavericks from 2005 to 2008 and the Brooklyn Nets from 2010 to 2012.
Johnson, who played 16 years in the league and was a point guard on the 1999 champion San Antonio Spurs, achieved his greatest coaching success with the Mavericks. Dallas won 60 games twice, and Johnson was the NBA coach of the year in 2006 after guiding the Mavs to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Miami Heat in six games.
This is also an interesting hire in terms of personal relationships. His son Avery Johnson Jr is currently at Texas A&M. So that’ll be a fun story.
Johnson has a decent record in the NBA. A Finals appearance is nothing to sneeze at. We’ll see whether Johnson can connect with the young talent like College coaches have to do. I have no doubt that he can coach. It’s the College side I’m looking at.
