The upcoming Avatar sequel has been delayed.
Speaking at an event in New Zealand, James Cameron said that the “complexity” of the writing process has pushed the release date for Avatar 2 to late 2017.
“There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand alone film.
We’re writing three [films] simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that.”
Cameron continued saying:
“Parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and the environments [at the same time].”
Cameron also says that he plans to film the three sequels back-to-back with consecutive release dates.
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will return for the three sequels, with Sigourney Weaver returning but as a new character.
Avatar was released in 2009, earning over $2.8 billion at the box office.
