Many celebrities in Hollywood are rich, but very few are wealthy. After today, Ava DuVernay is going to be considered the latter. According to several reports, the famed director has finalized a deal with Warner Bros. worth up to $100 million. The new deal will mark her first pact with any company of this size. Beginning in January, the Oscar winner will work with Warner Bros. to create content that may include documentaries, drama series, comedy series, digital content and many other forms of content.
After word about the deal was announced, DuVernay spoke very highly of Warner Bros. She stated, “They love and support artists in wonderful and nourishing ways. They work within a traditional studio headed by Kevin Tsujihara that is stirring with untraditional energy and fresh protocols for intentional, inclusive image-making.” She also said, “Warner Bros is a terrific partner about matters of visibility and belonging for all kinds and cultures of people, which is our mission at Forward Movement. I couldn’t be happier to call Warner Bros TV my production home.”
Echoing Duvernay’s statements, Peter Roth of Warner Bros. said, “Ava DuVernay is one of the leading lights in our industry, a brilliantly talented writer, producer, director and entrepreneur whose ability to inspire with her art is exceeded only by her ability to entertain.”
By signing this deal, DuVernay becomes the latest acquisition in the ongoing content wars. Oprah recently signed a content deal with Apple and Viola Davis signed a deal with Amazon. Who knows what’s ahead?
