Every year we get that player where they’re remembered for their accomplishments way back when. Last year we saw Allen Iverson finally get his ‘3’ retired by the Philadelphia 76ers. The only time I wanted to watch something Sixers related.
And this year we will get a jersey retirement that I thought was done already! I mean how have the Atlanta Hawks taken this long to retire Dikembe Mutombo’s No. 55?! I mean seriously.
Well, better late than never I guess.
CEO Steve Koonin announced Tuesday that the team will retire Hall-of-Famer Dikembe Mutombo’s #55 during a ceremony Nov. 24 against the Boston Celtics.
The announcement came during Fulton County’s proclamation of Dikembe Mutombo Day, which hadpreviously been announced as Tuesday. Mutombo was honored by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners with an official proclamation. Koonin, Head Coach Mike Budenholzer and members of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation also spoke at the event.
No matter what age you are, if you know basketball, you know about Dikembe Mutombo and his finger wag. I mean it’s just so simple yet so great. It’s just perfect. I can’t wait to produce a savage block and then give it a finger wag. Ah the cherry on top of the sundae. 1,094 rejections in a Hawks uniform. So he’s now a Hall Of Famer and will get his jersey retired in ATL. Pretty decent year for Mr Mutombo.
