38 year-old Vince Carter is far from the days of going elbow deep in a basketball rim. He’s no where near dropping 30 points whenever he feels and you won’t catch him putting down alley-oops with ease.
He is smart though. Carter has figured out how to prolong his game in the league despite the many who have failed to do so in the past. He’s gone from a rim-rocker to a guy that can step out and drill a 3 in your face and just make you so mad beyond belief because he’s 38. He shouldn’t be doing that. Luckily enough when the Memphis Grizzlies have him on the court, they use him to do just that. Make 3’s and showcase his high basketball IQ.
Unfortunately for ‘Vinsanity’, his career is dwindling. He’s getting to the point where father time might be taking the final win against Vince and the former high-flyer knows it.
He’s now looking ahead to what’s next in his future.
From Scott Cacciola of the New York Times.
“You think you’re going to be the star, the go-to guy, forever,” Carter said last week. “But when reality sets in, that’s when it’s a challenge: How do you deal with that?”
When he was injured this season, Carter made several appearances on the Grizzlies’ television broadcasts as a guest analyst. As usual, he was anticipating the next phase of his life, once his playing career concludes. He would like to work in television, he said, even though he has not ruled out coaching. If only he could find a way to do both.
“Maybe I could come into practice and the coach would let me help out,” he said.
Either avenue for Vince would be spectacular. Carter is wise and he has learned from some of the best coaches throughout his time in the NBA and with the North Carolina Tar Heels learning from Dean Smith. Carter has a high basketball IQ and he’s shown it by changing his game to prolong his career.
Carter as an analyst though would possibly be gold. He can use his high basketball IQ, he’d be a draw for television audiences and he has a great relationship with the players so maybe he can get some insider information. Carter speaks well and obviously can relate some awesome NBA stories with things going on in the league.
Could we see him on TNT replacing one of the ‘Inside The NBA’ guys? Maybe on ESPN? Who knows, but one thing that Def Pen writer Charlie Taylor pointed out, Carter doing Raptors games on TSN would just be gold and make the most sense.
