Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat have found a new home. The University of Arizona is reportedly inching closer to a deal that would send them out of the Pac-12 and into the Big 12.
“The school is amid the final steps, sources said, including detailing the move in an Arizona board of regents meeting Thursday night. Big 12 presidents and CEOs met Thursday to vote on approving the move,” Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.
Arizona is not the only school heading to the Big 12. Their Pac-12 counterpart, Arizona, is also heading back to the Big 12. Elsewhere, USC and UCLA are heading into the Big Ten. Not to mention, reports suggest Oregon and Washington could also be heading to the Big 10. To many college sports insiders, it appears that the days of the Pac-12 are nearly done.
“Should these teams jump to the Big 12?” Allen Hahn of ESPN asked.
“[These teams should] jump, run [and] do anything they can to get away from the Pac-12,” longtime college football reporter Paul Finebaum answered.
Conference realignment will not only impact the Pac-12. The ACC is also reportedly feeling the heat as rumors begin to swirl about Florida State leaving for what they believe will be greener pastures.
“I’m not that optimistic that we’ll be able to stay. I just don’t know that,” Florida State University President Richard McCullough told ESPN.
“It could occur, but something radically different is going to have to happen. All options remain on the table.”
