Earlier this month, Ariel Helwani announced that he would be stepping away from ESPN in order to focus on the next chapter of his career. In his three years with the worldwide leader in sports, the journalist will help bolster their MMA coverage by hosting two podcasts, offering fight night analysis and occasionally helping out with NBA broadcast coverage.
“We thank Ariel for his many contributions to ESPN’s MMA coverage and beyond. We had hoped to have him continue in that role and made him an offer to remain with ESPN,” the network said about Helwani’s departure.
“He chose to explore new opportunities and we wish him the best.”
In the next stage of his career, Helwani helped develop content for Spotify and run his own newsletter via Substack. Also, Helwani plans to put together for his YouTube channel while creating MMA content for BT Sport. Most notably, he’ll return to Vox Media where he’ll host The MMA Hour.
“I have always said that, ultimately, I work for the fans. I know this is what the fans wanted, and I’m so glad we were able to give this show back to them. And best of all? It’s now on twice a week,” Helwani said about reuniting with his old employer.
“Words cannot properly express how happy I am to return to Vox Media and how excited I am to re-launch the show in August. Take it from me: you can go home again.”
