Former two-time WBC Super Middleweight Champion Anthony Dirrell returned to his hometown of Flint, Michigan on Monday, November 20 and distributed 200 turkeys to those in need. Those who arrived early also went home with two boxes of Jiffy Cornbread Mix.
“People just really need it. If I can do it, then I will do it. I’m happy with the turnout,” Dirrell told MLive.com.
“If I don’t have enough turkeys, I’m sorry. Next year we will likely have more, but I’m happy.”
Dirrell, a Flint native, is an accomplished boxer who held the WBC super middleweight title from 2014 to 2015 and again in 2019. Along the way, he’s shared the ring with several contenders and champions, including Caleb Plant, David Benavidez and Sakio Bika.
When he’s not in the ring, Dirrell says that he’s inspired to give back to those in his community, a trait picked up from his grandfather, Leon Lawson Sr.
“I know he’s looking down on me and watching me saying, ‘Good job,’ Dirrell told MLive.com during the giveaway.
“I just love giving back to the hometown of Flint.”
