Not many people expected the New Orleans Pelicans to reach the playoffs this season. Their 0-4 start to the season is nonetheless disappointing for many.
The Pelicans have received massive statistical outputs from Anthony Davis. Healthy for the first time in some time, the big man has been incredibly impressive and productive for his team, averaging 37 points and 13 rebounds per game.
But Davis’ production has been for naught as the Pelicans have dropped four games against the Nuggets, Warriors, Spurs, and Bucks.
After the latest defeat, Davis expressed his disappointment with the team’s start (via Justin Verrier of ESPN):
“Definitely frustrating,” Davis said after Tuesday’s 117-113 defeat. “We can’t get a win. It’s frustrating.”
Fair enough. Davis wasn’t the only one to express frustrations after the loss; head coach Alvin Gentry also joined in on the fun:
“I’m frustrated, but I’ve got to find a solution,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. “I can’t be frustrated to the point of where I throw up my hands and not anything’s going on. It’s my job. That’s why they hired me here. I’ve got to find a solution to our problems. I’ve got to find a solution to why we’re turning the ball over. I’ve got to find a solution as to why we can’t go into the game with a defensive plan and stick to it. It’s very frustrating, yeah. But there have got to be solutions.”
Of course, the Pelicans are without two key players in Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans. However, they have been in three of those four games with chances to win and have not been able to finish the job. With Anthony Davis putting up historic numbers, that should not even be possible.
The Pelicans will need to find solutions quickly or this will turn into another long season in New Orleans.
