The forward has had trouble reaching expectations since being drafted number one overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2013. After being traded to the Timberwolves in the deal that brought Kevin Love to Cleveland, expectations were once again set high for Bennett. While he showed some improvement, it was not enough to guarantee him a spot in the team’s rotation, eventually leading to the buyout agreement.
As a free agent, Bennett will now be able to sign on with the team of his choice, and he may have several suitors. Portland, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn have been considered as potential landing spots for Bennett. All three teams are in need of talent and taking a shot on Bennett would be smart for all of them. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Toronto Raptors are also considering adding Bennett to their team. That may not be the best situation for Bennett as minutes will be hard to come by in that front court rotation. However, at this point Bennett would be wise to take any deal he can get.
UPDATE: ESPN’s Jeff Goodman is reporting that Anthony Bennett will indeed sign with his home-town Toronto Raptors later today.
