It’s been a big day for Batman. Earlier, DC revealed the new release date for Matt Reeves’ standalone film, The Batman to be June 25th, 2021. Now, ScreenRant is reporting that a Batman Beyond movie is in development. The animated project is apparently DC and Warner Bros’ response to the critical and commercial success of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Batman Beyond was a follow-up series to the immensely popular Batman: The Animated Series. It followed the story of Terry McGinnis, a teenager in 2039 who stumbles on an aging Bruce Wayne’s secret. After some convincing, Terry ultimately takes up the mantle of Batman. Guided by Bruce, Terry carved out a name for himself in the Batman universe; amassing his own rogue’s gallery onscreen while he gained popularity in the real world. The series ran for three seasons and was lauded by fans and critics alike. A feature film has long been in the works but nothing has gained traction up until now. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, a direct-to-DVD film was released in 2000.
The film is still very early in development and was only discovered because of leaked concept art from Warner Animation Group. Check those out below:
Nothing is known about the cast yet but it’s rumored that DC is looking for an Asian-American actor to voice Terry. The still-untitled film is rumored to begin production sometime next year with a tentative 2022 release window.
