Amir Johnson and the Toronto Raptors may get their reunion after all.
Sporting News reported that the two sides share “mutual interest” in each other. Considering that the Celtics are going to pass on bringing Johnson back to Boston, he may return to his home team.
[Amir’s] Boston exit could lead Johnson back to his adopted home in Toronto. Multiple league sources told Sporting News this week that there is mutual interest in getting Johnson back onto the Raptors’ roster this summer.
Boston started Johnson for 77 regular season games this season, but it was mostly out of necessity. Amir was not the Celtics first choice, but they started him because he was better than the next guy in the rotation (Jonas Jerebko).
If the Raptors are going to bring Amir back to Toronto, they will have to conduct some serious contact juggling. Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka are both due for big paydays this summer and Toronto may not be able to retain both Lowry and Ibaka. The Raptors will have $30 million in cap space this summer, and that may not be enough. So, Amir rejoining the Raptors doesn’t so far-fetched.
