Amazon has acquired the rights to the upcoming series, Selah And The Spades. Tayarisha Poe originally introduced the series as a film at the Sundance Film Festival last year.. Poe will lead the series with the help of Lauren McBride, who helped produce the original series. The Amazon series will also feature Emmy-nominee Jharrel Jerome, Lovie Simone, ina Torres, Jesse Williams and more.
In a statement, Poe said, “I’m thrilled that Selah and The Spades has found a home with Amazon Studios, and doubly excited to see the world of The Haldwell School expand and develop in theserial format.” She added, “I’d always hoped to work with a company that realized the multi-format potential of this fictional world, and truly we have found the ideal partners with Amazon.”
The series takes place at the Haldwell Boarding School where Selah leads the school’s popular group known as the Spades. As the leader of the group, she is responsible for dealing much of the school’s alcohol and drugs. Nearing graduation, Selah is on the hunt to find a successor to take her place.
Variety’s Amy Nicholson wrote, “Writer-director Tayarisha Poe’s cold and stylish debut, commands attention.”
The series does not have a stated release date at the moment.
