Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will not fight for the undisputed lightweight title on May 20, 2023 in Ireland as previously scheduled. According to a statement from Matchroom Boxing, Serrano has suffered an unspecified injury and the two parties will explore the possibility of fighting at a later date.
“Due to an injury sustained by Amanda Serrano, Matchroom Boxing and Most Valuable Promotions regret to announce that the Taylor-Serrano II bout on May 20 in Dublin will not go ahead as planned. The teams are in discussions about finding a revised date for the bout. Further details will follow in due course,” the statement reads.
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn nor Katie Taylor have said that there are plans to schedule an interim fight. The undefeated lightweight champion fought Amanda Serrano last April at Madison Square Garden. After taking six months away from the ring, she returned to fight Karen Carabajal last October. Taylor last took more than six months off in between fights back in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was unable to fight from November 2019 until August 2020.
Similarly, Serrano’s longest layoff in recent memory was caused by the pandemic. She was unable to fight between January and December 2020. Since December 2020, she has fought six times, picking up five wins and suffering one defeat by split decision.
