Fighting words are being exchanged between two of the top super featherweight fighters in the world.
Following her upset victory against Terri Harper for the IBO and WBC Super Featherweight titles, Alycia Baumgardner has repeatedly called out fellow super featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer. In a recent tweet, Baumgardner went as far as to say that she will “dog walk” the Top Rank fighter.
“I will dog walk this bitch,” she wrote in response to an interview Mayer had done.
Mayer did not let Baumgardner’s words go unchecked. After catching wind of Baumgardner’s tweet, she quickly fired back with one of her own.
“[I] can’t wait. Don’t try and baby that belt either. Time to to back up your big mouth and unify, Alycia Baumgardner,” she replied.
Mayer is also coming off of the most impressive performance of her career. In a 10-round bout, the super featherweight champion fought through fire to earn a unanimous decision victory against Maiva Hamadouche.
Baumgardner’s new promoter, Eddie Hearn, has indicated that the two fighters could meet in early 2022. If true, it would set up an unprecedented run in women’s boxing. Claressa Shields-Savannah Marshall and Amanda Serrano-Katie Taylor are also expected to take place in early 2022. However, none of those three fights have been set in stone.
