You know how the Golden State Warriors are one of the best offensive teams of the past couple of years? Well like the NFL has offensive and defensive coordinators. So do the Golden State Warriors and their offensive coordinator is assistant coach Alvin Gentry.
Being the assistant coach is an okay gig. You’re an integral part of the team. But for coaches. It’s all about being the head coach. And according to Inside Bay Area, Gentry wants to lead a squad again.
“I’m in a great situation, a great spot,” Gentry said Thursday. “Great franchise, not just from a basketball standpoint, but period. Owners like Joe (Lacob) are hard to come by. A general manager like Bob (Myers) is hard to come by. So I don’t have any desire to get into a bad situation because I’m in a great situation right now.
“If there’s a good situation, yeah, I would like to be a head coach again. But it would have to be a situation that would have to be very good. What we got here is very special, and I’ve been in the league long enough to know that I wouldn’t want to go into a situation that I didn’t think had potential to be this way.“
“It’s about the atmosphere that’s created,” Kerr said. “It’s about his spirit and his energy, his humor. The guys love him. They laugh at him, and they laugh with him. We all laugh at each other. Alvin’s got the most infectious smile and laugh.
“That’s a huge deal, and I think it’s one of the reasons that we have a really good working environment because he sets that tone of fun but serious work, too.“
Now Gentry would happily stay in Golden State. He’s not being suffocated as the assistant coach of the best team in the league. But man if there are some head coaching places in the summer. You better believe that Alvin Gentry is going to have a few phone calls to answer.
