Anthony Davis is now a $100 million man (and more), but the week of joy after signing a new contract still isn’t keeping him out of the gym. On the contrary, Davis is already back at work and draining threes. New Orleans Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry has big plans for star power forward Anthony Davis. He opened up about one of the plans on Tuesday night, informing the world that he wants Davis to extend his shooting range and also to make more corner 3-point shots next season.
“That’s got to become a consistent shot for him,”
Gentry said, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
“I don’t think he’s going to have any problem doing it. If you go back and look at his high school days, he was a very good 3-point shooter, but all of a sudden, he decided to grow 6 or 8 inches. He still has that range, but I don’t think it has been incorporated in the offense in college or the pros that he’s been in.”
Davis, who is 6-foot-10, attempted 12 3-pointers last season, making only one 3-point attempt, but it was it the one that mattered most for the team. He made a 3-pointer from 30-feet from the basket at the buzzer to lift the Pelicans to a 116-113 victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder this past February on the road. The victory helped the Pelicans gain their tiebreaker edge against the Thunder from winning three of the four games in the season series that ultimately clinched the final playoff berth in the Western Conference despite both teams ending with identical 45-37 records.
This is news should be terrifying for the rest of the NBA. The good thing about all of this is that Alvin Gentry is not promising a championship, at least not right away.
