PAC 12 leader Arizona will be without star guard, Allonzo Trier who has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA for testing positive for a banned substance. Trier participated in an NCAA sponsored drug screening in January which revealed a trace amount of a banned substance. The University will be appealing the NCAA ruling against the Arizona sophomore.
Per the Arizona Athletic Department:
“The amount detected was minuscule by scientific standards and appears to be a remnant of a substance, which the NCAA agreed, Allonzo had unknowingly ingested in 2016.”
Allonzo Trier missed the first 19 games of last season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, is the second leading scorer on the team, averaging 19.6 points and 3.2 assists. Trier along with freshman phenom DeAndre Ayton, lead an Arizona team (21-6 overall, 11-3 PAC 12) that is considered a national title contender. Trier, a former McDonald’s All American is an NBA prospect and projected as a second rounder in most mock drafts.
Without Trier, Arizona could fall in NCAA tournament seeding and potentially have trouble in the PAC 12 tournament against potential tourney participants USC, UCLA, Stanford, and Washington. Star sophomore guard Rawle Alkins and senior guard Parker Jackson Cartwright will need to pick up the lost production until a resolution can be made of Trier’s appeal.
