Allen Iverson’s heart, basketball ability and basketball genius will never be in question. After all, he is The Answer. Earlier yesterday, rumors spread that former Sixers Coach and friend of Iverson, Larry Brown, wants Iverson to be hired as an assistant GM. Assistant GM may be a little far fetched, but Iverson as a part of the Sixers long-term future isn’t a bad idea. He is one of the most culturally iconic NBA players ever.
According to Marc Narducci of Philly.com:
“I may not know everything about physical talent or anything like that, but I have a sharp mind when it comes to that look, being able to look into somebody’s eyes to tell if they are going to be in the foxhole with you tonight or if they are not,” Iverson said Thursday night. “To me, I am a basketball genius and I really believe that, so at any capacity I could help this franchise, that is what I am going to do, whatever they ask me to do.”
“Don’t put any pressure on the franchise to make a move or anything like that,” he said. “If it happens, that is what God wants. If it doesn’t, I am still going to be here right with them, riding with them.”
The Sixers may want to hire Iverson in a Global Ambassador situation with them, similar to what rapper Drake did with Toronto. The Raptors signing Drake, created much needed hype around a dying Toronto fan-base. Drake + an actual improvement of the team and the Raptors are now one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. If Iverson were to be hired like that, it can create more hype around these already exciting youthful Sixers. With more lottery picks, and a cast of young athletic players, the Sixers may be able to become a force very soon, and Iverson wants to be a part of that.
