It is not out of the ordinary to watch members of the U.S. military fly over the field before kickoff. However, the ceremonial flyover at Super Bowl LVII will be a bit different as the armed forces pay tribute to 50 years of women flying in the U.S. Navy. For the first time in Super Bowl history, the team of pilots that will fly over the field prior to kickoff will be entirely comprised of women.
“In a lot of ways, if you’re doing any type of flyover, it’s always a cool experience. But if you’re a sports fan, I mean, this is as big of a stage as you get,” pilot Jacqui Drew told AZ Central.
“Fifty years ago, there were six women (who) got their wings, and any kind of adversity or whatever they faced made it so that we can very easily go out and accomplish this.”
Women will be making history in a number of avenues throughout the Super Bowl. On the sideline of the Philadelphia Eagles, Autumn Lockwood will become the first Black woman to coach in the Super Bowl. Not to be forgotten, Nicole Lynn will become the first Black woman to represent a quarterback in the big gamel as her client, Jalen Hurts, takes the field.
