Tim Burton shared his view of Underland in his take on Alice in Wonderland in 2010, and six years later, the film’s sequel is here. As many already know, Burton has left the directorial seat open for James Bobin (The Muppets Movie), but has still been participating as a producer (Slash Film). Many people have been wondering how different the sequel will be, considering that Burton has such a distinctive style. Today, the film community has been given both a new trailer and some answers:
“In Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, an all-new spectacular adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories, Alice returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter” (Disney).
ComingSoon.net provides more insight to the film’s story. The tale begins with Alice, who has spent the last few years sailing the high seas, coming back to London and finding a magical looking glass. Thus, she returns to the mystical Underland, where she finds that the Mad Hatter has lost his “Muchness” and it’s up to her to save her friend before time runs out.
But where will Tim Burton’s stylings fit into this new adventure? Slash Film was able to get the word from James Bobin, who claims that the sequel will be slightly lighter than the first film:
“I felt there was something I could bring to it. I’ve always loved Lewis Carroll, and I’ve always felt he was this kind of…my background is in comedy, as you all know, and I thought I could bring that comedic element to it, because Lewis Carroll was a guy who was, sort of, a surrealist satirist.”
Be sure to take a look at the latest trailer below. Alice Through The Looking Glass stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Rhys Ifans, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, and Timothy Spall. The film reaches theatres on May 27.
