U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez plans to file articles of impeachment against at least one Supreme Court justice. Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to take this course of action is triggered by the Supreme Court’s most recent ruling involving former President Donald Trump. On Monday, July 1, six Supreme Court justices determined Trump cannot be charged for actions closely connected to his duties while in office. As a result, many expect some of the election interference charges brought against Trump by U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith will be eliminated. In response, many Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, have raised concerns about how this ruling may empower Trump’s actions moving forward.
“The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control. Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy. It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return,” she tweeted.
“The Framers of the Constitution envisioned a democracy governed by the rule of law and the consent of the American people. They did not intend for our nation to be ruled by a king or monarch who could act with absolute impunity,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries added.
Meanwhile, members of the Republican Party have argued that the President “must have immunity.”
“Today’s Supreme Court decision is a historic victory for President Donald Trump, the Constitution, the rule of law, and the American people. The President of the United States must have immunity, like Members of Congress and federal judges, which is necessary for any presidency to function properly,” House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik said.
“I look forward to continuing to work with President Trump to ensure his victory and Save America.”
